Gestures is a project that has evolved over the last two years and draws inspiration from several sources longer back. Starting with Tariq Heijboer his school time in which he, together with his fellow students, had to perform a kind of alphabet dance named Eurythmy. This choreography developed by Rudolf Steiner and his wife was meant to express trough dance, the supersensible world. But also sounds and letters can be expressed within these dances. During his school time this ‘letter dance’ was always seen by everyone as the silliest thing ever but nevertheless it stayed in the back of his mind. Specially the idea that the body can trough performance, becomes part of language is something that interests him.
Later on, Tariq Heijboer discovered the work Finger Ornaments (1995), by Kazach artist Lida Blinova. This work is a series of postcards where the artist uses her hands to create abstract images, like hand gestures. He associated this with the Naked Alphabet (1970) by Anthon Beeke and came up with the idea to make a typeface with his hands as a (lightly cynical) homage to the Naked Alphabet. Beeke at the time created the project as a reaction to Wim Crouwels rational New Alphabet (1967).
